In the Old Testament, people who were truly sorry about something wore the
roughest of clothing and put dust or ashes on their heads. I am told that in
India people show they are repenting of something by grasping their ears.
I think the best sign of repentance is not either of those things, but to live a
true change in your life. That is what I get out of reading Acts 26:20 -
"...they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.."
Repentance, as I understand it, is not feeling regret for getting caught doing
something that we know God would not be pleased with. It is a true sense of
being sorry for turning away from what we know God has said not to do. We
usually don't have to do much thinking about what we should have and could
have done today for the Lord. We can think of ways to show that we repent
by turning again to God's ways and let others see that repentance in our lives.
